How the 2015 Honda CR-V Beat 30 Contenders to be Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year

The CR-V was up against many contenders, including popular SUV’s like the BMW X5, Ford Expedition, Nissan Rogue and the Lexus NX, to name a few.  Each judge drove 30 of the contender vehicles before debating on which ones would be the finalists.  Once they narrowed it down to nine finalists, the judges drove these vehicles on longer road loops as well as an off-road course that featured tight turns, steep descents and challenging hill climbs.  After this, the judges had to decide which SUV met their 6 key criteria: design advancement, engineering excellence, performance of intended function, efficiency, safety and value.

Advancement in Design

Restyled from front to back, the 2015 Honda CR-V features new taillights, new grille and LED daytime running lights. The Touring trim is the first CR-V to rock the 18-inch alloy wheels which compliments the sport exterior perfectly.  Also available on the Touring model are side mirrors with integrated turn indicators. Not only does it give a sleek look, but it’s also useful when there is heavy LA traffic.  Inside the CR-V, the ergonomics drew praise from Motor Trend.

Increasing your Fun Quota with New Engineering

According to Motor Trend, this is the criterion “Honda can sink its teeth into.”  In order to improve the “fun quotient,” powertrains were revised to include the new “Earth Dreams” 2.4-liter engine, which has been upgraded to increase both torque and efficiency. Horsepower remains the same with 185, but now gets there 600rpm earlier at 6400. The 2.4-liter engine is hooked to a continuously variable automatic similar to the Honda Civic, which received nothing but praise from Motor Trend.  They also are fans of the CVT, especially in the Sport mode.  One of the judges, Christian Seabaugh, says, “This feels like a Honda should, with light steering, great feedback, and competent handling chops. It’s way more fun than any compact crossover ought to be.”

Impressive Performance

The CR-V was built to be a convenient family hauler for your everyday commute.  It was made to be durable and safe in any kind of weather.  On the off-road test, Motor Trend judges found that the CR-V’s aggressive tire treads and AWD was able to handle their steep gravel hill with hardly any fuss.  Whether you are in the mountains or in the city, the Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System is a blessing. The system senses loss of traction and can automatically transfer power to the rear wheels and help you grip the road with ease.

With the new 2.4-liter engine Earth Dreams Technology, fuel economy has become even better for the CR-V.  Combine that with the 4-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission.  You can still achieve max horsepower and peak torque but at a lower rpm. Direct –injection technology now gives you more efficient use of fuel.

There hasn’t been official IIHS testing on the CR-V to report, but engineers have told Motor Trend that the CR-V’s engine compartment crash structure better absorbs energy in small-offset crashes.  There are many preventative features the CR-V offers as well, including Collision Mitigating Braking Support, Lane Departure Warning, adaptive cruise control, and Lane-Keeping Assist System.

You can never go wrong with Honda’s legendary resale value.  According to Motor Trend’s August 2013 Big Test, Honda depreciates 13% less than competitors like the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester and Mazda CX-5 and insurance costs average 10% less.
